I received a message from MTN Nigeria informing me of their plan to review Lumos solar subscription prices on November 29, 2021.
In 2016/2017, MTN Nigeria partnered with Lumos solar power provider to bring affordable and sustainable electricity for Nigerians. I got mine in February 2017 with the agreement that I would be paying installmentally for the next five years (February 2017 - February 2022). Though you can buy it outrightly if you have the money, the choice is all yours.
See the current subscription: MTN Lumos Subscription Plans (Updated December 2022)Since 2017 when I started using MTN Lumos, they have reviewed their subscription price more than three times, and the price review means increasing their subscription price. When I went to purchase the solar system, I made the following payments:
- None refundable commitment fee = N26,000
- Three months subscription = N12,000 then, it's now N14,000
- Installation fee paid to the installer = N2,000.
Total = N40,000Back then, the monthly subscription was N4,500, but currently, the monthly subscription is N5,400, and yet MTN is planning to increase the price again. What I don't understand is why. MTN Lumos is not different from a hire purchase that allows someone to purchase a product and pay installmentally.
Government should stop this injustice. I believe that when someone pays all the initial fees, they have agreed to purchase the MTN Lumos solar at a specified price. MTN doesn't have the right to wake up every day and increase the subscription of their solar system whenever and however they desire.
Let's look at this from another direction. If you buy a Bus and give it out on hire purchase with the agreement that you will be receiving N150,000 monthly for the next 24 months. Can you call the person and tell him that things have changed and that he will no longer be paying N150,000 but N200,000 starting next month.
No one does that except MTN Nigeria because the Government doesn't pay attention to such things. After all, they are not affected directly or indirectly, but this doesn't seem right. MTN should stop this madness. If they are broke, let them get money from somewhere else.
We are reviewing the price because of the economic situation
When I received the notification of the price review, I called MTN to know what happened and why they are planning to increase the price again. The agent told me that the price have to be reviewed due to the country's economic situation.
Let's not forget that MTN Lumos solar subscription was N4,500 monthly and N12,000 for 90 days (3 Months) at the rate of N4,000, but now, their monthly subscription has increased to N5,400 per month and N14,000 for 90 days. Despite the increment over the years, they are not yet tired but planning to increase the price again.
In reality, I don't see how the economic situation affects a product that I purchased in 2017 under the hire purchase agreement. The solar system and its components were imported into Nigeria in 2017 with the current exchange rate or fees involved.
Now let me ask, is MTN providing the sun that the solar needed to charge, or how else is the economic crisis in Nigeria affecting them?
It's okay for MTN to set a new price for new customers but not old customers because if they had told me that I would be paying 5400 for a solar system that can not even power an LED Tv for 24 hours, I would have rejected the offer but changing the subscription price whenever they want is unacceptable. I think it's time to show MTN Nigeria that we are not fools.
