After intermittent spells of downtimes, Telecom Satellite Television, TSTV, recently announced a pay-per-view satellite service in Nigeria with prices being as low as N3 daily. This uncommon payment scheme has consistently been left pending and unattempted by market leaders like DSTV. According to the popular south african satellite operator, a pay-per-view pricing system is not technically and commercially feasible in addition to being impossible presently in the industry.
Multichoice which owns DSTV while defending their stance on exempting it's brand from the widely encouraged setup explained that there is a wide difference between Pay-As-You-Go used in the telecomunication industry and the pay-per-view model. According to them, unlike in telecomunication, broadcasters cannot offer pay television services because satellite broadcasting is a one-way system which doesn't has an enablement for broadcasters to determine when a subscriber is connected and/or watching or what channel is being viewed.
The pay-per-view model employed by TSTV is also commercially impossible as averred by the satellite broadcaster. A pay-per-view model isn't the only interesting introduction by the indigenous brand, there's a purported enablement for a pause in subscription. This would mean subscribers only pay for what they view and not a generally-made subscription model.

The price of TSTV decoder (setup box) is about N5,000. The decoder has in it's description a full Personal Video Recording function, a time Shift functions via a USB external mass storage, and a DVB s.2/s MPEG 4 – 2nd generation of Satellite Digital Video Broadcasting with High-Efficiency Video.
The setup box including the additional accessories costs more higher than N5,000 and the cost differs in various locations. There has also been complains about the non-delivery of some setup boxes and accessories requested of by subscribers.
Could you watch the premier league and other league football on TSTV?
There are some few authorized sports channels to view on TSTV, although none do broadcast live EFL matches for now. Some channels which do broadcast live matches are authorized to stream other major leagues including the Laliga.
Rights to other sporting events have also been acquired by the satellite TV.
TSTV Vs DSTV
In comparison with DSTV, TSTV sincerely has a length of way to go. The broadcast quality of DSTV is greater than those of the indigenous brand. This is because TSTV employs the use of direct to home (DTH) service while DSTV uses cable satellite network in receiving and broadcasting television signals. The only area which the later beats the former is in the subscription value.
The pay-per-view model by TSTV allows users to only pay for what they are presently viewing, with an added convenience for subscription delay. With this, the perculiarity of Nigeria's epileptic power supply which would have led to a wasteful subscription is parted aside.
