They have some confusion about the Catalytic converter, also known as Indomie in Nigeria. Many believe that a Catalytic converter helps reduce fuel consumption, but that is not the case. If you want to find out the absolute truth, then read this post till the end to know more about Catalytic converters (Indomie).
Does a Catalytic converter reduce fuel consumption? The answer to this question is NO. The Catalytic converter has nothing to do with fuel consumption; it is an emission control device that transforms harmful gases and other pollutants from the engine. Many things impact a vehicle's fuel efficiency, which are as follows:
- Worn spark plug
- Dirty fuel injector
- Leaking ignition wires
- Bad oxygen sensor etc
Does a Catalytic converter (Indomie) reduce fuel consumption?
Another contentious issue in the automobile sector, particularly in Nigeria. We're going to settle that argument today. The exhaust system of a car includes the catalytic converter. It's a pot in your exhaust system that may be round, oval, or oblong-shaped.
It may be found directly in the centre of the car's underneath exhaust on select models. While for others, it is located just by the car's manifold, and other vehicles may have more than one.
What do catalysts converters do?
The engine produces harmful gas, which the catalytic converter transforms into less hazardous gas somewhat kinder to the environment. You can infer from the preceding that a catalytic converter is a vehicle's pollution control or health safety equipment. Whether or not it uses gasoline directly has no bearing on it. There is a twist to it, though.
In most automobiles, the oxygen sensor, or 02sensor, uses the catalytic converter as a housing to measure the quantity of oxygen in the exhaust. By measuring the quantity of oxygen in the exhaust, the 02sensor transmits information about the air-to-fuel ratio to your vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) or brain box. It is in charge of regulating how much fuel or oxygen is injected into the combustion chamber. This enables the engine to operate effectively and efficiently.
Therefore, when the vehicle is stolen, the oxygen sensor is removed with the catalytic converter. By doing so, a crucial element assuring a car's fuel efficiency was removed (02sensor).
Even with a simple pot in the exhaust system, and a functioning 02sensor, the vehicle will still run as economically as it would with a catalytic converter.
Therefore, a catalytic converter (Indomie) does not affect a car's fuel usage unless the cells collapse and obstruct the exhaust, which makes it difficult for the engine to release fumes and may cause the car to struggle to drive or even stall.
In reality, a car without a catalytic converter is likely to be more fuel-efficient and powerful than one since the engine can breathe and move more freely because the exhaust system won't be filled with expensive metals trying to clean the exhaust's exhaust air.
Why Catalytic converter is highly valued and often stolen in Nigeria
The following metals are used to make catalytic converters: platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh). These precious metals are highly prized and hard to come by, which accounts for their high cost and popularity as a target for thieves. The anticipated cost of recycling catalytic converters in America alone in 2010 was $3 billion.
Therefore, if you live in Nigeria (which lacks emission legislation) and your vehicle doesn't have a catalytic converter (Indomie), you should. Most importantly, disregard pollution and global warming (even if we did, we wouldn't enforce it), and focus instead on the operation of your 02sensor. Rest confident that yours is visibly and even more efficient than cars with converters.
